dvsa approved driving instructor

I’m Alex, I’ve been a registered DVSA approved driving instructor for four years  now and have recently just started my own school after working under another reputable firm. I live in Oakham with my wife and daughter and cover all of Rutland as well as parts of Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. I’m committed to my job and ensuring that students are provided with a safe, informal and calm environment when learning to drive.

My approach is geared entirely toward the client. Not only does it play to their strengths, it aim’s to focus on their weaknesses whilst allowing them the opportunity to enjoy driving and the experience of learning. I don’t believe in just preparing somebody for a driving test I prefer to get them ready and confident for dealing with all aspects of life on the road.

I offer support towards the theory test as well as the practical and can offer defensive driving lessons, motorway lessons and refresher courses. The dual controlled car that I drive is available for each student to use on their test when the time comes and I can also be present during tests if needed.

Since becoming a driving instructor I have achieved high pass rates in both the theory and practical and I pride myself on the low number of faults my clients score on test.

Getting Started

You must have a provisional driving licence for Great Britain or Northern Ireland when you’re learning to drive. You can find out more information HERE

The Theory Test

The theory test consists of two elements, a multiple choice test and a hazard perception test. The multiple choice test consists of 50 questions including case studies, which are picked from a bank of one thousand questions. In order, to pass this part of the test, pupils will need to score 43 out of 50. The second element, the hazard perception, is based upon your recognition of and reaction to hazards. It consists of a number of video clips, in which you are seen to be the driver, and you must click the mouse to inform the computer that you have spotted a hazard. In order to pass this part of the test, you have to score 44 out of 75.

To help you prepare for these tests, I recommend a number of books, apps and websites that are particularly useful. I can also offer one-to-one tuition if you feel that you need it.

The Practical Test.

After passing the theory test and gaining confidence in driving through practice in your lessons, I will advise you to book your practical when ready. The practical consists of a forty minute drive from a designated test centre with a DVSA examiner. The test will begin with two ‘Show Me Tell Me’ questions. Then, once the drive has begun, you will be expected to carry out one manoeuvre, ten minutes of independent driving and a general drive covering a variety of areas and situations. The test may also include an emergency stop but it’s not always included. You will be expected to demonstrate a safe and consistent driving standard throughout the test.

All of what is included in the test will have been covered thoroughly during our lessons. I also help you prepare for the test by carrying out mock exams.

“Show Me Tell Me”

In the practical test, you will be asked two ‘show and tell’ questions about safety and maintenance checks on your car. Getting one or both of them wrong will count as a driving fault in your test. You can find out more HERE
